How Long Does an MVR Evaporator Last?

18 Aug, 2026 9:55am

MVR evaporator

An MVR evaporator is designed to last 15-20 years, but different components age at very different rates, so the real answer depends on which part you are talking about. The main body — the evaporation separation chamber, heater shells, and piping — is built to pressure vessel standards and can easily serve 15-20 years when the materials are correctly selected and the unit is not run beyond its temperature and pressure limits. In practice, many WTEYA units have been running steadily for more than 20 years.

🔧 How Long Do the Core Components Last?

The vapor compressor is the precision rotating heart of the system, with a design life of 10-15 years. Its service life depends heavily on maintenance: bearings are normally replaced every 3-5 years, mechanical seals every 1-3 years depending on operating conditions, and the lubricating oil must be changed and analyzed on schedule. When vibration readings exceed the limit, the compressor should be inspected and repaired promptly.

The heat exchange tube bundle lasts 5-12 years overall, and its life is decided mainly by corrosion and scaling from the feed water. With wastewater low in chlorides, a 316L tube bundle lasts 8-12 years; in high-chloride environments, even 2205 duplex stainless steel or titanium tubes may only reach 5-8 years, because frequent cleaning after scaling accelerates corrosion.

Auxiliary equipment — vacuum pumps, water pumps, valves, and instruments — typically serves 5-10 years before normal replacement.

💡 Material Selection Decides the Lifespan

Material choice is the biggest single factor in component life. 316L stainless steel suits low-chloride wastewater and gives the full 8-12 years of tube life; for high-chloride streams, the shell and tube bundle must be upgraded to 2205 duplex stainless steel or titanium to slow corrosion. Getting this selection right at the design stage is far cheaper than replacing tube bundles mid-project.

⚙️ Three Habits That Extend Service Life

First, strictly follow the operating procedure for evaporation temperature and pressure — never run beyond the design limits. Second, keep up proper feed water pretreatment that controls hardness, chloride, and suspended solids, so scaling and corrosion are reduced at the source. Third, build a regular maintenance program: check compressor vibration and oil quality every quarter, carry out a full inspection every year, and clean the heat exchanger according to its scaling condition.

Plants that follow these three habits routinely exceed the design life of the equipment.
