MVR Evaporator Maintenance: A Practical Service Checklist

22 Sep, 2026 9:11am

Why a Maintenance Routine Pays Off

An MVR evaporator is built for 15–20 years of service, but that figure assumes disciplined upkeep. Without it, three problems surface first: scaling on the heat transfer surface, compressor wear, and a gradual decline in evaporation capacity. A practical routine separates the work into daily checks, scheduled servicing, and periodic overhaul.

Daily Checks

Start each shift with the rotating equipment. On the steam compressor, watch vibration, noise, bearing temperature, lubricating oil level and oil pressure — any deviation warrants a stop-and-inspect. On the recirculation pump, verify current, flow, and suction/discharge pressure to avoid dry running and cavitation.

Then confirm process stability. Vacuum should hold steady, and evaporation temperature should stay inside the design band — typically 40–90°C for a forced circulation design. Finally, read condensate conductivity: below 10 μS/cm is normal; a rising trend signals mist entrainment or a tube leak.

Scheduled Servicing

Set the calendar by running hours, not by convenience:

  • Heat exchanger tubes — chemical or CIP cleaning every 1–3 months based on the actual scaling rate; open and mechanically clean when scaling is heavy.
  • Compressor — oil and filter replacement per the manufacturer's manual; inspect shaft seals and rotor clearance.
  • Vacuum system — clean the vacuum pump, verify condenser heat transfer.
  • Controls — inspect PLC cabinets and VFDs; calibrate temperature and pressure transmitters.
  • Safety devices — certify relief valves and pressure protection equipment on schedule.
  • Anti-Scaling Discipline

Scaling control is mostly operating discipline. Cap the concentration factor and honour the salt discharge cycle so the liquor never reaches supersaturation. For high-hardness streams, scale inhibitors supplement — they do not replace — proper control. Before any extended shutdown, flush the system completely; residual concentrated liquor will crystallise as it cools and can block tubes and piping.

    Overhaul and Spares

Compressor and tube bundle work should follow the manufacturer's overhaul intervals, and tube replacement or compressor repair is best left to the original manufacturer or a qualified service team. The industry norm is a one-year unit warranty with two years on core components. Stock fast-moving spares — seals, filter elements, instrument probes — and keep a remote support channel open.

WTEYA provides life-cycle service covering operator training, scheduled callbacks, spare parts and remote diagnostics, backed by nearly 20 years of evaporation and crystallisation experience.

    Quick Answers

Tube cleaning frequency? Every 1–3 months, driven by the measured scaling rate.

Condensate conductivity rising? Check the mist separator and heat exchange tubes immediately.

Long shutdown without flushing? Not advisable — crystallisation can permanently block piping.
